If it wasn’t a 6 hour drive, making it just beyond a non-long-weekend getaway distance, it had the potential to be a place for many repeat excursions! And it is for a lot of folks. From the combination of the ocean and the tranquil sound, to the history and hair-raising story of the Wright Brothers, majestic lighthouses, wild horses, and a living sand dune in the middle of dense habitation — the outer banks provide a uniquely diverse experience if you take the time to see it. Of course there is the beach, but unlike many beach destinations, it’s got more to offer.
Photo Tip: It’s one of the best places for sunrise-over-the-ocean photography. There are multiple fishing piers that will give you the anchor you will need as foreground.
